Arbitrator

Antonio Gordillo has acted as President, Sole Arbitrator and Co-arbitrator in proceedings before the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the International Arbitration Chamber of Paris (IACP).

As an arbitrator, Antonio Gordillo offers:

  • His ability to understand the parties’ interests as well as counsel’s strategies, having participated in 17 arbitrations as counsel and having advised clients for 15 years.

  • His knowledge of multiple areas of law and commerce, reinforced by his participation in more than 30 cases as arbitrator, party counsel and secretary of arbitral tribunals.

  • His experience applying over 10 different national laws in arbitrations, as well as multiple investment and free trade treaties.

  • His working knowledge of the arbitration rules of the main institutions.

  • His ability to resolve disputes in English, French and Spanish.

  • The experience of having trained as secretary of arbitral tribunals in over 10 cases with two of the most internationally recognised arbitrators: Professors Juan Fernández-Armesto (one of the 18 “Most in Demand Arbitrators” worldwide, according to the Chambers ranking) and Eduardo Silva Romero (Bands 1 and 2 in the Chambers’ ranking of “Most in Demand Arbitrators” in Latin America and Europe, respectively).

Counsel

Antonio Gordillo was part of Dechert’s international arbitration team for nine years. Prior to that, he trained at top-tier firms in Spain and worked as Deputy Counsel at the Secretariat of the ICC International Court of Arbitration. During Antonio’s tenure at Dechert (2014-2023), his team was a regular in Global Arbitration Review’s Top-30 ranking of firms, and was ranked Band 1 in the main arbitration rankings for Latin America and France.

This track record enables Antonio Gordillo to assist his clients in the following situations:

  • Arbitrations. He has represented clients in almost 20 arbitral proceedings. Depending on the complexity of the case, he can either lead the defence alone or team up with top-level colleagues. Antonio also has extensive experience working as co-counsel with local firms from several jurisdictions.

  • International litigation. He has assisted clients in the strategic direction of their defence before courts in, among other jurisdictions, the United Arab Emirates, Chile, France and Spain.

  • Pre-litigation negotiations. Antonio advised, for example, the Belgian group Katoen Natie in its successful negotiations with the Republic of Uruguay after filing a notice of dispute with a USD 1.5 billion claim.

  • Drafting of contracts and arbitration clauses. He has been involved in the drafting of numerous contracts and arbitration clauses in complex agreements providing for, among others, multi-party and multi-contract arbitration.

  • Structuring investments to access international law protections. He has assisted national and international groups in identifying the appropriate strategy to ensure that their investments are properly protected.
